U.S. Senate Nominee Charles Booker Locked Arms With Supporters Across Kentucky

From the Hood to the Holler, Booker rallied crowds as he spoke about SCOTUS’s decision that overturned Roe v. Wade

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Yesterday, Charles Booker, U.S. Senate nominee stood in solidarity with Kentucky families, and all those directly impacted by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade at major reproductive justice rallies across the commonwealth, including in Pikeville.

“What Friday’s ruling from the Supreme Court means is that access to quality healthcare in rural areas, especially Appalachia, is now even harder to access,” Booker said. “The ruling is an invasion of big government into our lives and is the strongest form of government overreach in modern history. We will not be silent about this. This is bigger than party, this is about humanity. We will stand up and fight back, because the people of Kentucky are worth fighting for.”

An event that was planned in less than 48 hours, Booker gladly accepted the invitation to speak at the Reproductive Rights Rally. The rally that was slated to begin at 3:00 p.m., saw a steady crowd of people pack into the courtroom resulting in over 250 Appalachian supporters cheering in support for Booker.

“I was in foster care multiple times and I have been sexually abused in the very foster care system that these people are advocating for children to be born and sent to, and now I have no other option but to join and fight,” said Danielle Kirk, a mother of two. “This is an issue for all all of us, men, women, non-binary, our trans brother and sister –– it affects all of us.”

The rally also featured various community organizers who discussed the implications and dangers the SCOTUS decision will have on women and families in the region. Among those speakers were parents emotionally sharing their personal struggles with pregnancies, health related issues, and how this ruling will impact others in similar situations, they once experienced.

The rally concluded with an impromptu meet and greet with Booker and supporters who expressed their gratitude and support for Booker’s campaign for U.S. Senate. According to recent data, nearly 5,000 abortions were performed in Kentucky between April 2021 and April 2022. The vast majority accessed the health care in Louisville. Hundreds of people traveled from Tennessee, Indiana and Ohio to receive this healthcare procedure.

Booker also attended several other community events this weekend including a reproductive rights rally on Friday in Louisville, Lexington Pride, his kick off event for the Booker Summer Jam series and many more.
